Return to pointe after injury

Earlier in the week in the clinic, I was working with a dancer who is ready to return to pointe work after 3 weeks in a boot. She began with strengthening exercises then barre work then full class without jumping and finally is doing well dancing full out in class with flat ballet shoes. Now that she is ready for pointe work, her question is, “What shoes do I wear? I have a new pair that has only been worn twice and an older pain that is worn but not dead.”

A new pair of pointe shoes is stiffer and harder to move smoothly in. The increased rigidity through the shoe can be a great thing for added foot support post injury. The downside is that it can be hard for a dancer to feel smooth and natural when dancing on pointe after an injury and the stiffer shoes can amplify that harshness and awkwardness in the transition time.

There are pros and cons to each shoe type, so what should a dancer do?

I believe the first 1-2 times back on pointe after an injury should be in a newer pair of shoes. The increased support will be beneficial as your feet get used to moving through these positions again.

After the initial pointe work sessions, I think an older pair of shoes is best. It will be easier for the dancer to feel natural and light in her shoes again. Of course dead shoes should never be used, but a gently worn pair is perfect for the first few weeks as the dancer returns to performing full out!
